LAF WORKSHOP
The results as well as the intentions and approaches of the two workshop days are showcased here. Get in touch in case you like to get more detailed information.
DAY I – SPATIAL THOUGHTS
Collages and mappings were created. This way a sensitivity for abstract understanding and associative thinking could be exercised.
We started off with a set of printed out images and patterns from different fields of culture. The participants were split in groups. Each group could choose the prints that caught their attention and use them for their collage.
They were free to cut out elements and assemble them in which ever way they found interesting. No particular theme was set and there was no right or wrong way of doing it. For some pupils this was an entirely new and maybe even intimidating task, considering the restrictive and job orientated approach they knew from school.
The design students were distributed evenly to support the groups in dealing with the undefined challenge of 'creating something that they find nice'.
A second task followed after the first set of collages was created, this one already being a bit more applied. The idea was to think of a pattern, that could be painted on the street, where the elements were going to be placed. This pattern was supposed to pick up shapes from the collages, that were created before.
Colored paper was provided for the second task, in order to help create more graphical result that could technically be executed with street paint.
Thinking about the pattern and its relation to the spatial situation gave the participants a first idea of the design process they were contributing to.
DAY II – SCULPTURES
Wooden sculptures were created in multiple teams. Each team was assigned one technique to connect the wooden pieces. Strings, Nails, Glue, ...
The participants were therefore challenged to push the boundaries, that each technique brings along. Each group was asked to use their collage of the day before as a starting point for their creation.
Throughout the day the invention of various connections and compositions could be observed. The resulting sculptures revealed an aesthetic which gains its charm from the immediacy and curiosity with which they were created.
Both workshop days ended with the groups giving a small presentation of their works. This gave everyone the chance to find inspiration and learn from each others experiences.
